Once Upon A Time...

A Milwaukee Road station agent would stand outside, regardless of weather and time of day, and perform roll-by inspections; back in the days of steam engines, first- and second-generation diesel locomotives, telegraphs, codelines, and train orders.

Today? This shot can't even be re-created; the depot has been relocated elsewhere and a pre-fab sheet metal building for CP track maintenance crews sits here. Only the rails, searchlight signals (for now), and ubiquitous GE's soldier on.

If you ever see an old, no-longer-used train depot that still sits trackside, stop and spend a few minutes getting some shots and visualizing life at the depot while it was still in-service. They are a part of our history, as a nation.

Savor those few moments because you'll never know when the depot will be gone, forever.

Serene...

On a serene, yet cold, November Sunday afternoon, a northbound Hiawatha silently passes the boarded-up, since-moved Sturevant depot.

I remember the day as being eerily quiet except for the wind rustling through the trees. It's as if the train brought the scene to life with the depot whispering memories as the train went by.

Photo reprocessed in Silver Efex from an earlier (and crappier) version.

Location:

Comment:
The Empress of Eights crosses over from 2 to 1 in front of the old Sturtevant station with two Geeps trailing. The old station is on borrowed time, rumor has it that CP has set a date in June to knock it down if no one comes forward to take it and move it off site.

29/365 - Anyone need a tractor?

Yeah, I missed 2 days in my project 365. What's a guy to do? Anyway, rather than quitting, I'm just picking up with today and moving on. Anyway, I saw this on the way to work and thought that it would make a good photo. Unfortunately, I wasn't quite as steady as I would have liked, so this is the best I could do.
