I wrote this originally for a string quartet--violins, viola and cello--but something wasn't quite right... So I added the tiny piano bit to set things off. Like most of what I've done, this started as a short phrase and kept growing. This piece seems to have a conflict/resolution arrangement with two distinct sections separated by an "interlude." The individual parts are played with Kirk Hunter solo instruments--when it comes to solo strings, I don't have much to pick from. Comments and suggestions are welcome! |

Hi everyone! It's been a crazy 2 weeks. Between being super sick, school, and opera tech rehearsals, I've been swamped! Luckily, things are starting to settle down! This was a project I started a while back but never got around to finishing. Here is my cover of Somebody I Used to Know by Gotye ft. Kimbra. I'm even playing a little viola in this one! Skinner and Ross C. Banerjee—All Rights Reserved Myles reflects: Here is an improvisation where nothing was worked out ahead of time except for the idea of three solos with piano accompaniment, followed by a code with all the instruments playing together. The title is a red herring, and was simply added after the fact as a sarcastic gesture towards increasing our Canadian Content. The viola solo followed by the clarinet solo reminds me of Ives's Largo for clarinet, violin, and piano. The transitions between the solo instruments are effective, and I enjoy the lyricism of the solo lines; this track almost sounds musically coherent. Ross reflects: This could have been incidental music to the Star Trek: The Original Series. Incidental music has a lot of vague background noises with a little tune to "whistle" to. This tune fits the bill. There is some very confident playing by all the solo instruments. |

Skinner and Ross C. Banerjee—All Rights Reserved Myles reflects: In the early days, we often relied on musical "crutches" to help us through an improvisation. Several motives recur throughout the track; these had been written out on the blackboard before playing. Among these motives was the five-beat pattern that forms a sort of ground bass throughout the improvisation. If memory serves (and it often doesn't), this pattern wasn't actually intended to be used in this way, but Ross turned it into an ostinato, giving the track a semblance of form. Naturally, the first entrance of the trombone completely misses the point. Ross reflects: What an ostinato (repeated pattern) does for a piece is give the listener a sense of form. If the listener is lost, at least they know where they are in the repetition. A 5/4 ostinato is something you can't ignore. The interplay between the iterations of the ostinato reminds me of Steve Reich's Phase pieces. |

After a long week and many hours spent in the comp lab, I've finally finished recording live Viola for this piece. Many, MANY thanks goes to Jesse Isleib for giving such a profound performance to this piece. Without him all I'd have would be a decent sample provided by the incredibly kind Michael Morone, so my heart goes out to you, Mr. Isleib. I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I enjoyed creating it (though gruesome it may be, recording sessions are pretty fun)! This is my mock Prelude for a video game of sorts. If I ever get the opportunity to score an RPG, this would be the first thing people heard the moment they turned the game on. |
